DAMA Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK®)
The “body of knowledge” about data management is quite large and constantly growing. The DAMA-DMBOK® serves as a reference guide to all the areas of data management. It defines a standard industry view of data management functions, terminology and best practices, without detailing specific methods and techniques. The DAMA-DMBOK® is not a complete authority on any specific topic, but is on source of information from widely recognized publications, articles and websites for further reading, especially since it includes a comprehensive bibliography for each function. The DAMA-DMBOK® can be purchased through DAMA International (http://www.dama.org) and through Amazon.com (http://www.amazon).
The Certified Data Management Professional® (CDMP)® credential is awarded to those who qualify based on a combination of criteria including education, experience and test-based examination of professional level knowledge. This certification is growing as the gold standard for measuring accomplishment in the data management field. This credential is offered at the Mastery or Practitioner level. There are three exams to pass: the Data Management Core, and two specialty exams of the candidate’s choice. Depending on the credential level, a candidate must have either a minimum of 2 or 4 years of demonstrated data-oriented work experience.
Information concerning the CDMP® and on the process for earning the credential can be found through DAMA International at http://www.dama.org
