There are times when we need to be nimble, seize new market opportunities, and quickly wrangle new data sources and analyze their usefulness, look for possible correlations, and run it through analytical and AI/ML models.

Yet at some point, if we continue to use the data set, we need to go back and perform data hygiene, conform definitions and dimensions, add descriptive metadata, secure and catalog it, and generally make this data available in a more trusted, stable, and well-understood manner throughout the enterprise.  Where and when do data governance techniques to bring this new data "into the fold" and into a more controlled environment, come into play?   How do we balance and reconcile these approaches?

Data Governance and Analytics Enablement at Scale -- Dale J. Ward

The essential goal of modern analytics is to effectively harvest strategic and tactical insights from organizational data assets and connect those insights with decision makers at the speed of relevance. Making that connection, however, requires the organizational process capability maturity to ensure data is actively managed as asset to the end that it is Visible, Accessible, Understood, Linked and Trusted (VAULT). Classic Data Governance is critical to enabling these VAULT principles and is the foundational first step towards fostering data-driven behaviors. The promise of modern analytics at scale, however, serves as a distraction and, in too many cases, an organization’s roadmap towards targeted degrees of data management maturity is sacrificed in its pursuit. In this presentation, we’ll explore procedural, technological, architectural and behavioral considerations for modern data platform development. We’ll show that it is possible to leverage specific design choices to ensure big “E” enterprise data governance is properly embedded and respects both the pace and priority of executing analytics use cases. We’ll look closely at the Air Force’s award winning, mult-tenant VAULT Data Platform to see how the Air Force was able to both democratize access to analytics capabilities while leveraging the activities of its tenants and various platform automations to enable active governance and stewardship of critical enterprise data assets.
